Why we love… Food For Thought

Why we love… Food For Thought

In our commitment to offer our couples an amazing wedding day, Greenhouse Loft has partnered with seven caterers who have proven to be the best in their trade. This list was created  as a benefit to our clients to ensure them an unforgettable experience on one of the most important days of their lives. We have worked with these caterers for many years at Greenhouse Loft and each one has something special to offer

Couples often ask who my favorite caterer is. That is such a difficult question to answer as they’re all so wonderful and unique. So, I got to thinking about our list of caterers and what we love about them! For the next seven weeks, I am going to feature each caterer so that you can get to know them and what makes them special to us.

Why we love… Food For Thought

Food For Thought has been in the catering business since 1983 and is one of Chicago’s top catering companies. I reached out to Nathan Printz, who is one of the Event Producers for some more details about what sets them apart. He said it’s their mission to create moments. “Our business has never been about just food, it’s about Chicago. It’s about people and it’s about the experience. With a team full of moment makers, we strive to make magical lasting moments for you and your guests.”

Each wedding is different so I asked Nathan what his most memorable wedding at Greenhouse Loft is. “Every wedding has something special that I walk away from thinking, ‘WOW how incredibly awesome was that…specifically for the newlyweds’. Whether it be that we were able to recreate their great grandma’s sugar cookie recipe or even getting a few shots on my phone that most guests will never see, and sending them to the couple after the wedding. Every wedding is special!”

His favorite type of dinner service? “I personally like events that use food stations, specifically ones that vary in flavor. It’s fun to create specific names for food items and add a little spice to the layout of the buffet. It helps create a fun atmosphere for each guest. It’s not a traditional type of service, but it definitely adds to the event’s uniqueness.” The center island at Greenhouse Loft creates a perfect station (or two), we can also use some of our tables to have stations around the dining room. I’ve seen Food for Thought do a donut station, which was pretty incredible!

Of course, I had to ask what Food for Thought loves about us at Greenhouse Loft! “I think what I love most about Greenhouse Loft is the design and architecture of the room. If you add a few tea lights and a little pop of color with the napkins, the room speaks for itself without having to use much décor. It’s such a unique space. Secondly, the practices that are in place to ensure events have as little impact on the planet as possible. Greenhouse Loft is a part of the Chicago Green Wedding Alliance, which is a group of vendors in the Chicagoland area that committed to protecting the planet with green recycling practices and earth friendly products.” Food for Thought is also a member of the GWA, which we truly appreciate. When they’re in our space, we know that their commitment to a low-waste event is just as strong as ours.

We love to see the special moments unfold during Greenhouse Loft weddings. Your wedding takes a lot of planning, many decisions and possibly some sweat and tears. Having a caterer like Food for Thought by your side will help ensure that the whole planning process was all worth it. When the big day rolls around, between the staff at GHL and Food for Thought, you can just show up, get married, and have a lot of fun!

"We’re still pinching ourselves after what felt like the most perfect wedding day: pictures at some of our favorite Chicago places, a garden ceremony surrounded by family and friends, incredibly delicious food and drink, beautiful flowers, awesome “dance” moves fueled by the DJ’s impeccable song selection, fun, laughter, joy, and we both cleaned up pretty nice too. Thank you to all our vendors and, of course, family & friends for making it such a truly special day."

People often say at least one major thing will go wrong with a wedding. While likely true on many levels, our event was as close to perfect as we could have imagined. We prefer to let the pictures tell the story, but give extra thanks to the wonderful venue (Greenhouse Loft), caterer (Fig), deejay (Daniel Musisi), and florist (Larkspur), as well as Balani custom suits and tailoring, Binny’s, and of course, all of our guests.

Andrew & Fernando's Sunday Dance Party Wedding

We truly looked forward to Andrew and Fernando's (aka Drew and Sergio's!) wedding day for months! From the very first showing, we all knew this was going to be a very energetic, loving, and special celebration.  Who would have thought that May 31st, 2015 would be chilly, but it was, a little bit - Did that stop these guys and their friends and family from having the best day ever? Nope!  "Sunday Funday" was the theme, and fun was an understatement.  We have never seen a dance floor so packed and full of life during the daylight hours as we did that Sunday!  There's no better way to hear about their day than from the couple themselves, so please enjoy the photos along with their memories. Thank you Sergio and Drew for letting us be part of it!

"It’s true, you’ll just know. The moment we walked through the doors we knew we would be getting married at Greenhouse Loft. We recycle but we wouldn’t call ourselves conservationists and never heard of a green wedding until we found Greenhouse Loft. The space was perfect for our wedding of 125 guests. Our late spring wedding had several themes; “Hipster Chic”, “Urban Spring” and most importantly a “Sunday Funday Wedding” Up for the challenge we recruited Lynn of Pollen, Christen from Big Delicious Planet and DJ Kate from Toast and Jam; all of which we found listed on the GHL vendor list.”

“One of the fun parts of planning for a wedding is shopping for a caterer. Big Delicious Planet is a caterer who buys their food from local farmers and even have a large garden on†site. Christen was very friendly,  great to work with and her suggested macaroni bar was a smash hit. They also made our desired naked wedding cake that Lynn from Pollen accented with flowers. The combination made for a very beautiful collaboration. Bonus again, BDP donated all our leftover food to a local pantry. Another small victory for the day knowing nothing was going to waste.”

"Lynn far surpassed any expectations we thought we had. We shared our Pinterest page with her to give her an idea of our aesthetic and then got out of her way and let her do her thing. Her arrangements were so sophisticated, vibrant and lush. I was originally concerned that a “green wedding” meant a lot of twigs and dried flowers, but it was quite the opposite in that she captured the essence of a spring garden while using locally source flowers. The bonus is knowing that all the beautiful flowers do not get thrown away at the end of our big day. Pollen donates all the flowers to a local nursing home. A perfect way to brighten someone else's day."

“Toast and Jam matched us with Kate. We cannot say enough good things about her. Her song choices keep the crowd up and dancing. Aside from her talented DJing, her MC skills were on point when it came time to cut the cake, first dance and setting the tempo for the entire day. She played every song we requested and took the time to get to know our Spotify playlists to play some obscure ones to bring the house down!”

“The superheroes of the “Green Team” goes out to the entire GHL staff. It was an amazing and beyond easy experience working with them to plan our big day. Though we planned the entire day ourselves, the onsite staff and Jamie made any worries of not having a wedding planner disappear with ease. They made sure the entire day ran smoothly. I cannot imagine having had anyone else shoot our wedding day than Jamie herself and her husband Eric! It was effortless working with them and their pictures wonderfully captured the magic of the day. The more and more we look at them we constantly find new gems and details only their lens’ were able to capture. We also purchased the photo booth package. We hands down recommend it. Actually, you would be a fool to have your event here and not take advantage of the amazing styling and moments that Steve captures on film. The photos from the booth alone make for a great coffee table book. Together the GHL teams has given us so many priceless moments to cherish for years.”

Cheers!

Emily & Terry's whimsical spring wedding

It was a brisk May 9th but that didn't stop this lovely crew from having loads of fun outside!  It was a perfect spring day in Grant Park in downtown Chicago.  Flower petals were gently falling off the trees, and the early spring flowers popping out of the ground.  Emily and Terry had the first outside wedding of the year in our garden that day too!  Enjoy the photos and the write up that the two of them wrote about their day.  We couldn't agree more with their sentiments of what a wonderful day it was.  xo

"Our big day could not have been more perfect. We began at the Hilton Chicago, where the bridal party dressed and prepared for portraits before our first look. The Bride and her bridesmaids had their makeup and hair done by Vanessa Rose Makeup. When the time came for the first look, Jamie and Eric found us a lovely spot in Grant Park across from the hotel, with white flower petals falling around us like snow. After our first look and some additional wedding party photos in the park, we took some fun portraits at the Kinzie Street bridge and headed on to Greenhouse Loft for the ceremony and reception."

"We had our ceremony in the beautiful outdoor space, and despite slightly chilly temperatures, it was perfect. The Maid of Honor played and sang Adele's "Make You Feel My Love", and our officiant Tracey Bianchi created a ceremony that carefully blended our backgrounds and desires, incorporating words of love from each of us to the other."

"After the ceremony, we took family and wedding party portraits in the Ultimate Photo Booth, allowing us to take home beautiful formal portraits with our loved ones on our special day."

"The indoor space for our reception was decorated with tea lights from Greenhouse Loft and unique and gorgeous flowers and centerpieces made by Beth from Larkspur Floral, and set exactly the right mood for our night of celebration. Speeches by the fathers of the Bride and Groom, the Best Man, and the Maid of Honor were given during the delicious seasonal dinner from Food for Thought. Tyler, our DJ from Cage and Aquarium, kept everything running smoothly and efficiently throughout the dinner and speeches, and into the dancing portion of the evening, where the dance floor was packed from start to finish. In the midst of the dancing, our guests were presented with a late night snack of "mega-cannoli" from D'Amato's Bakery."

"As we looked back at the end of the night, we agreed that we wouldn't change a thing about our day, and all of the guests we spoke to agreed. Everyone worked together to make it a special, memorable occasion, full of love, and we couldn't be more grateful."

Many thanks to everyone involved in making this night spectacular!

Zoe + Jason's "Between Two Ferns" Wedding

Zoe + Jason's "Between Two Ferns" Wedding

Zoe and Jason came to see Greenhouse Loft when it was literally...a piece of concrete!  Fashioning hard hats and all, this couple envisioned the beauty and potential we planned well before the wood floors, windows, and twinkle lights were installed.

It was a special treat to spend the day with these two love birds.  May 16, 2015 was one of the first nice warm days of the spring, everything was perfect!  From the delicious food from Food for Thought to the jams on the dance floor from DJ Chicago.  It was all perfect.  But take it from the bride and groom themselves as you read their account of the day accompanied by the photos taken by Steve Ewert, Jamie Davis and Eric Davis of Greenhouse Loft Photography.

-----------

"Our wedding day was the culmination of almost ten years in each others lives and four years of off and on planning.  From when we first saw Greenhouse Loft in 2011 while it was still under construction, the venue always had been in the back of our minds as we debated between a Midwest or East Coast (our current home) ceremony.  Ultimately we decided in the spring of 2014 to marry in the city in which we met and grew close, and we were ecstatic to book a date for the following spring."

"Our day together started with a first look in the gardens of Millennium Park, with the iconic Chicago skyline as the back drop. With the full cooperation of the weather all afternoon, Jamie and Eric were able to get a fantastic set of pictures before heading into the Chicago Cultural Center. Inside we had the opportunity for some great shots among the ornate tilework in entryway. We were then whisked away to the north side in a black-on-black Tesla Model S for the start of our ceremony."

Our ceremony went beautifully, an affair we had meticulously crafted to be 100% our style. Officiated by the groom’s close friend of 20 years, having quotes from astrophysicists and a ring box vaguely resembling a Zelda treasure chest definitely made it our own. We customized the beautiful modern venue by spending untold hours crafting a frame supporting diaphanous paper cones that served as an intimate ceremony back drop. The space was just as we envisioned it and having friends and family in attendance was perfection.  The flower arrangements frankly blew us away by simultaneously surprising us and being just as we imagined, and Kate from Fleur Du Jour meshed well with our sense of humor as she helped us get married Between Two Ferns.

"The reception was no less exciting with Steve manning the Ultimate Photo Booth. The beer and cheese pairings, the station-style dinner, and the simply elegant tiered cake all kept our guests and us happy. Dylan did a great job paying homage to our musical tastes by mixing in favorites like Sneaker Pimps while keeping the party going.  Mike set up some amazing video shots, and we can’t wait to see the results. As we rode off at the end of the night, we couldn’t think of anything we would have changed."

"There are always the stories of the one big thing that went wrong at a wedding, but that just didn’t happen.  We attribute this success not to luck, but to Greenhouse Loft and all our vendors (especially Laura and The Ideal Day!) for really putting forth the effort to get every little detail right and making it a  phenomenal experience that we will cherish for the rest of our lives."

Thank you to the wonderful team of vendors!

Emily + Terry - Sneak Peeks!

It may have been a chilly May day, but Emily and Terry didn't seem to blink an eye.  First looks in beautiful Grant Park and a stop at the Kinzie Bridge, followed by an outdoor ceremony in the blooming spring garden!  Delicious food from Food for Thought, flowers by Larkspur and tunes (on records!) by Cage and Aquarium.  So many beautiful shots from the day that it's difficult to choose just a few.  Stay tuned in the next few weeks for many more! Congratulations again to Emily and Terry!

Lindsay and Ken's Chic Spring Wedding

Lindsay and Ken are such a fun and sweet couple. The couple got married at Greenhouse Loft in May 2013 and we loved capturing all the special moments on their big day. The bride and groom got ready at the Dana Hotel and Spa, and Jamie Davis captured their first look on the hotel's rooftop patio. We headed to the Chicago Theater and the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo to capture photos of the bridal party prior to the ceremony. Their ceremony was held at Greenhouse Loft, with the couple situated under the A frame on the glasshouse side of the loft. The dinner tables were topped with gorgeous arrangements made of flowering branches. After dinner guests danced the night away and enjoyed getting their portraits taken by Steve Ewert in Greenhouse Loft's Ultimate Photo Booth.

Check out the highlights from their wedding day. All photos by Jamie Davis, Eric Davis, and Steve Ewert for Greenhouse Loft Photography.

And check out this great video that LEAP Weddings created for Lindsay and Kenny!
